Advanced Latex Balloon Flights

Our Boomerang and Doongara products enable advanced latex balloon flights that do more than simply ascend until burst. Vent valves, ballast release devices, and cut-away mechanisms adjust the buoyancy and time aloft of inexpensive and readily available latex weather balloons. Latex balloon flights are possible with the following general parameters:

  • Float altitudes from 100 to over 30,000 meters
  • Payload masses up to 10 kg
  • Flight duration up to 24 hours

Types of Advanced Latex Balloon Flights

Listed below are some of the flight profiles that are possible using Smith & Williamson’s Boomerang and Doongara products. By tailoring the buoyancy of the balloon(s), you can control the duration of the ascent, float, and descent stages of latex balloon flights. This results in more useful time at altitude for your payload.

Level Horizontal Flight ProfileLevel High-Altitude Boomerang Latex Balloon Flights

Balloon ascends to a specified altitude, becomes neutrally buoyant, then is recovered by parachute after flight termination. Provides stable, long-duration Lagrangian drift for your payload.

Constant Rate Descending Flight ProfileConstant Velocity Descent Latex Balloon Flights

Balloon ascends to a specific altitude, becomes negatively buoyant, and descends under the balloon. Unlike a parachute it descends at a relatively constant velocity. Provides undisturbed air sampling and increased flight duration for your payload.

Stepped Vertical Flight ProfileTandem, Stepped Ascent Latex Balloon Flights

Balloon ascends rapidly to a specific altitude, becomes less positively buoyant and slowly ascends until burst or termination. It is recovered by parachute. The initial quick ascent helps reduce the balloon’s exposure to high surface winds and gets it through the tropopause. The slow ascent is used to increase the time in the sample region.

Multiple Float Flight ProfileLow-Altitude Boomerang Latex Balloon Flights

Balloon buoyancy is controlled via gas-vent and ballast release from a ground-based mission control. Real-time telemetry allows targeted sampling at the altitude of interest for your payload.
